2025-10-25 – Innvik: A Quilt Inspired by Historical Textiles (In-Person)
Schedule:
October 25 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)
Instructor:
Mike Ellingsen
Location:
This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.
Instructor Mike Ellingsen has set a personal goal to design a quilt each year based on an item from the Vesterheim collection. Innvik is his choice for 2025 inspired by the Innvik sweater from Nordfjord, Norway. Mike's design creates a lap size quilt (58-1/2" x 76-1/2") and is a bit easier than the two previous year's patterns. It is a two color layout with high contrast colors. A cutting list will be sent out before class so students can arrive and start sewing right away. There is a lot of cutting! If you wish, you may change the color palette to customize your quilt.
Level of Instruction:
Confident beginner—students must be able to sew an accurate 1/4-inch seam (no set-in seams or curved piecing required).
Supplies:
- A pattern will be available in the Vesterheim Museum Gift store.
- Fabric in any two contrasting colors. (Mike is planning on using dark brown and ivory)
- A fabric kit will be available for purchase from Red-Roxy Quilt Company in Decorah
- Other supplies include a sewing machine, thread, typical sewing supplies, a rotary cutter, a ruler, a mat, and an iron.
