Marit Nelson – Døren til fjordent (the door to the fjord)
NE-265MN
$400.00
This is a Past/Present/Future exhibit piece. Available to pick up or have shipped after January 11, 2026.
Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by a door in the Kolsrudstugu house in the Hallingdal Folkemuseum in Nesbyen, Norway, painted by Embrik Bæra. Rather than the typical depictions of plant life we see in rosemaling, Bæra played with the same scroll and flower shapes, but applied them to themes from the sea, depicting waves and shells. For this self-portrait, I was drawn to the concept of opening a door to my ancestry - finding connection to the past through folk art.
Dimensions: 12 x 12 inches
Materials: oil and acrylic paint on wood panel
Marit is a singer, multi-media artist, and rosemaler who was selected for the first cohort of Folk Art Apprentices at Vesterheim and subsequently studied in Norway with a grant through Vesterheim and the Kurtich Foundation. Her interest in rosemaling began at an early age, and she has continued to develop her relationship with the art form through experimenting with traditional pieces, face-painting, and lots of glitter.
