2025-09-04 – Dragon-Style Embroidery (Online)

OL.2025.Q3.70
$450.00

Schedule:

Four Thursdays, September 4-25 (6:00–8:00 PM CT)

Instructor:

Laura Berlage

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Explore and celebrate early medieval wool embroidery with these interwoven Nordic dragons! The Bayeux Stitch (a type of laid and couched work) is named for the famous 33-meter-long stitched “graphic novel” called the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066. This iconic form of embroidery was also present in Iceland, Norway, and Sweden dating back at least to the 800s. Learn the stitches worked in this tradition and apply them to bring this knotwork piece to life with wool thread on a linen ground while exploring the history behind the historic pieces.

Prerequisites:

This is for students who have taken Laura’s Wool Embroidery Level-1 course.

Supplies:

This class includes a kit shipped to your home with all the materials you need to be successful (a $90 value!), including linen fabric marked with the design, wool yarn for your project from the instructor’s sheep, chenille embroidery needle, and more.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to provide sharp thread scissors, a 10-inch embroidery hoop. (You can make an 8-inch hoop work, but you will need to move the piece around.) It's strongly recommended that students acquire a copy of Tanya Bentham’s book Bayeux Stitch, which will be referenced throughout the course. Also, an optional embroidery stand is recommended.

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
