In western and northern Norway, brides wore a silver or gilded bridal crown with hanging decorations, often shaped like bowls, leaves, or flowers. Crowns were usually owned by wealthy farmers or church parishes and were available for brides to rent.
This bridal crown from Vesterheim's collection is gilded silver, glass, and silk. It was made in Bergen, Norway, in the mid-eighteenth century. Vesterheim LC 5632 – Gift of Martha Skaar, Ragnhild Skaar, and Gunvor Skaar Gooding.
Laminated, cut to the shape of the crown. 4 x 5 inches.
