In Norway, drinking ale or beer was an important tradition, and it was served at births, baptisms, weddings, and funerals, as well as holidays, like Christmas and Midsummer. Ale was poured into a special bowl to drink and then pass to share with others.
This ale bowl from Vesterheim's collection has double horse and ram handles and was made in Western Norway in the eighteenth century. Vesterheim 1985.097.002 –Gift of J. Harry and Josefa Andersen.
