This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School. 

 

During her time as Artist In Residence at Vesterheim, Becky Lusk studied a Dragonstyle Drinking Horn carved by Lars Kinsarvik. Considered the most important creator of the "Norwegian Style of Woodcarving," Lars Kinsarvik based his designs upon Viking era carvings. The class project will be a plaque utilizing many of the designs from this drinking horn. 

 

Level of Instruction: 

Students should have some carving experience.


Supplies: 

The instructor will have prepped material available for purchase in the $15-$35 range. If you prefer to prep your own, the pattern will be available to students prior to the class.

Tools:

Please note, this list is a guideline of the tools that the instructor used when carving Kinsarvik style dragonstyle. They are full-size carving tools unless noted. The tools marked with the * are the ones that will be used the most, therefore you should have tools close to the stated size.

  • Backgrounding: #22 - 3mm skewed spoon gouge (or dogleg), right angle * #23 - 3mm skewed spoon gouge (or dogleg), left angle *
  • Chisels: #2 – 12mm skew
  • Gouges: #3 – 6mm gouge *
  • #3 – 8mm gouge
  • #3 – 12mm gouge *
  • #3 – 20mm gouge
  • #3 – 25mm gouge *
  • #5 – 12mm gouge
  • #6 – 10mm gouge
  • #7 – 6mm gouge *
  • #8 – 4mm gouge *
  • #8 – 6mm gouge
  • V-tools: #12 – 3mm v-tool *
  • Micro v-tool (palm size)
  • Mallet
  • Carving Knife*
  • 2 Quick grip clamps or use bench dogs on bench in classroom
  • Pencil
