Artist Statement:
This hatakista (triangle box) is inspired by two Gudbrandsdal artists, Hans Belle and Jakob Klukstad. I was inspired by the artifacts I saw at Maihaugen on an ASF Fellowship trip there and pictures shared by retired curator and author Kåre Hosar. The red-on-red palette is one I've developed and loved since my first Gudbrandsdal class when my Norwegian instructor, Ragnvald Frøysadal, challenged me with it.
Dimensions: 7 x 22 x 6.5 inches
Materials: Hata Kista (triangle box) oil paint
Pam began rosemaling in 1974. She studied with most of the American Gold Medalists as well as many of the Norwegian masters. She paints most rosemaling styles especially Hallingdal (her first love), Gudbrandsdal, Valdres, Os and Rococo. She received her Vesterheim Gold Medal in Rosemaling in 1995. She has received two ASF Fellowships to study in Norway and Sweden, focusing on using the early traditional methods of painting with powdered pigments, hide glue or egg tempera.
