Artist Statement:

Kristen Lauritzdatter was part of the farming community around Kjørlaug, Norway, and one of the women in my family tree. Speaking her name here honors her story and recognizes her place in mine. The Kjørlaug family was revered in my grandmother's stories. Every name was considered and carefully added to a growing line of people reaching back to the 1600s. Attaching these names to a piece of my rosemaling is my way of saying, “I see you, Kristen."

Dimensions:  4 x 4 inches
Materials:   watercolor on paper, archival wax sealed, archival wood panel

Kristin is a decorative art painter from Pennsylvania, who learned Norwegian rosemaling from her Norwegian grandmother. Only a generation away from the Kjørlaug farm, this grandmother held tightly to folk art traditions and invited Kristin to paint thousands of these repeating strokes beside her. Kristin paints rosemaling today in memory of the rhythmic movement and flow of her grandmother's brush.
