Artist Statement:
I have been painting Norwegian-themed pieces for 20 years, starting with the ships at Bygdøy in the Viking Ship Museum. The Viking ship's curvature, intricate geometrical patterns, mythological creatures, and symbolic designs on the bow, stern, and figurehead have been a symbol and centerpiece of Norwegian culture and the Viking age for centuries. The Vikings investment in ship artistry reflected power, wealth and rank, revealing how the ships were functional, displayed status, and often intimidated. This is why I painted "Ambush"... a Viking invasion.
Dimensions: 12 x 32 inches
Materials: acrylic on canvas
In 2006, having been an artist for 20 years, Jana returned to Norway for the third time to re-visit relatives she had met in college. She decided to paint Viking ships, including detail in the prow and figurehead. This led to painting landscapes, homesteads, and having art exhibitions in Norway.
