Artist Statement:
I bought this trunk at rosemaler Marlys Hammer's estate sale and as I took it out of the dark garage, I saw a very light chalk design that she had done. I was excited. It has been a journey connecting the right lines to the lost design. I hope I have honored this wonderful teacher and that she would be proud of her design as I painted it. It is my journey to improve my skills, now and forward. I sat for three hours with paint mixed, afraid to put my brush on this trunk. Was I ready? Was I good enough? I finally moved forward for four hours and then, I had it. I know I didn't have Maryls's special stroke work but going forward, I know I can do a fine job with a Telemark design in my hand stroke. Practice, practice, practice.

Bonnie grew up near Stoughton, Wisconsin, surrounded by rosemaling her whole life. A vocational rosemaling class in 1982 followed by two children, a full-time job, and a remodel of a two-room log cabin home, her rosemaling activities lived in her dreams then. She has attended numerous rosemaling classes that have impacted her skills as a painter. She will always remember Marlys Hammer starting class with this Bible verse; Psalms 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it."
