Description
Curious about beautiful Scandinavian colorwork knitting? In this beginner-friendly workshop, students will learn the foundations of Norwegian two-stranded knitting (also called stranded colorwork knitting). This 2-hour class introduces the essential techniques needed to knit with two colors at once while creating traditional Nordic-inspired patterns.
Students will practice reading simple color charts, carrying floats, managing yarn tension, and knitting in the round using two colors. By the end of class, participants will complete a small sampler swatch and leave with the confidence to continue exploring Norwegian-style colorwork projects at home.
Students will learn:
- How Norwegian two-stranded knitting works
- Holding and managing two yarn colors at once
- Reading basic stranded knitting charts
- Knitting in the round
- Managing yarn tension evenly
- Catching and carrying floats
- Switching colors smoothly
- Creating simple Nordic motifs
- Tips for avoiding puckering
- Finishing and blocking colorwork swatches
Prerequisites
Students should already know:
- Basic knit stitch
- Basic purl stitch
- Casting on and binding off
(No stranded knitting experience required.)
Supplies
A complete kit of materials including practice yarn in two colors, printed chart handouts, beginner colorwork pattern, stitch marker, mini-tapestry needle and a sweet treat from Vesterheim (a $45 value) is included in the cost of registration and will be shipped to your home.
Students need to supply:
- US 6 or 7 circular needle
If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
Additional Supplies
Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
