2026-01-31 – Kurbitsmåling a Dala Horse (Online)

OL.2026.Q1.10
$180.00

Schedule:

January 31 (9:30-1:00 pm CT) and February 1 (9:30 am-12:30 pm CT)

Instructor:

Kim Garrett

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

In this class, students will learn the traditional Swedish art of Kurbitsmålning – the decorative folk painting seen in northern Sweden. We will explore the history of this craft, its bright colors, and the flowing floral patterns that make it unique.

Vesterheim will supply each participant with a wooden Dala horse, paints, and brushes. Step by step, you’ll learn traditional kurbits techniques—how to create the flowing leaf shapes, bold outlines, and vibrant color combinations that make these horses so special. By the end of the class, you’ll have a beautifully painted Dala horse of your own, along with a deeper appreciation for this cherished piece of Swedish folk art.

Level of instruction:

Advanced beginner to advanced. You should have some experience with rosemaling in the past.

Supplies:

A complete kit of materials shipped to your home (a $65 value) containing paints, brushes, and woodenware is included in the cost of registration.
