2024-09-20 – Embroidered Mittens (Online)

September 20 and 21 (5:30-7:30 pm CT)

Steph Anderson

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Have you ever gazed in awe at the exquisite mittens displayed in museum galleries – those marvels crafted from the ancient technique of nålbinding, adorned with delicate embroidery? Journey back to the Viking Era or earlier Iron Age, and learn the same techniques those before us have used in decorating and embroidering their socks, mittens, and other nålbinding garments.

In this class we will be adding embroidery to your mittens. We will learn to add a little structure to the fabric of our nålbinding mitten, plan a design to embroider either using a pattern that is in your kit or making your own pattern, and learning embroidery stitches and techniques to make a mitten that has some beautiful embellishments. We will have an opportunity in our first session to view some of the embroidered mittens in the Vesterheim collection for inspiration.

Level of Instruction:

No embroidery experience needed. You will need to supply your own mittens by either purchasing or making your own nålbinding mittens. If you wish to learn how to make the mittens for yourself, you are encouraged to take Melba Granlund's Nålbinding Mittens class in person on September 6-8.

A kit of materials to embroider your mittens will be shipped to your home (a $35 value) is included in the cost of registration. Participants will need to supply their own nålbinding mittens.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
