First Cuts: Scandinavian Flat Plane Figure Carving (On-Demand)

Interested in learning the basics of Scandinavian figure carving? This class is perfect for first-time carvers or folks who want to brush up their skills. Over the course, students will experience the history, traditions, and steps involved in the traditional handcraft of Scandinavian flat plane figure carving. Emphasis will be placed on the introduction and skillful use of traditional cuts and stylized shapes to bring a Dala horse, Thor's hammer, and tomte to life. Skills covered will include:

• Stropping your knife
• Cutting techniques including push cuts, pull cuts, stop cuts, chip cuts, and roll cuts 
• Removing machine cut surfaces
• Adding details to your carvings

Note: This program has been designed for students to experience on their own schedules. There is no live Zoom event and no scheduled class time – you can participate anytime during the next three months when it works for your schedule! As soon as you register, you will receive an email with information about how to log in and access the online course materials.

Supplies:

A kit of materials including a carving knife, safety glove, strop and stropping compound, carving blanks, try sticks, cutting guides, and a sweet treat from Vesterheim is included in the cost of registration. Shipping/handling fees will be charged at checkout.
