2025-03-13 — Intermediate Tapestry Weaving: Wise and Foolish Virgins (Online)

OL.2025.Q1.29
$385.00

Schedule:

Seven Thursdays, March 13 - April 24 (2:00-4:00 pm CT)

Instructor:

Laura Berlage

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Inspired by the iconic Norwegian “Wise and Foolish Virgins” tapestries, this weaving course will take a deep dive into the techniques of billedvev (picture weave) as well as some rutevev (square weave), building on skills learned in levels 1 and 2 of Laura’s Introduction to Tapestry Weaving courses. We’ll also be adding new skills and techniques along the way (hence the “stretch”), which makes this is an excellent course for students preparing for Level 3. History, culture, context, and couture will all weave their way into the course, along with stories and ballads of medieval and Renaissance women with chutzpah.

Are you a fan of the "Wise and Foolish Virgins" tapestries? Join us for this exciting course and stretch your tapestry skills with this beautiful project!

Prerequisites:

This class will build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2, and is designed for graduates of Laura Berlage's Level 2 Introduction to Tapestry Weaving class.

Supplies:

This class includes a kit shipped to your home (a $145 value!) with beautifully dyed wool yarn from the instructor’s sheep, decorative hanger for displaying your finished tapestry, ribbon bindings for finishing and mounting, and patterns and cartoons for the elements of the design along with a sweet treat from Vesterheim. Students will also receive a digital copy of the 70+ page color photo essay that documents each step of the process as well as offers cultural visual references that inspired the project (including pieces from the Vesterheim’s tapestry collection).

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies:

Students are responsible for providing their own loom (the same loom as used in Intro to Tapestry 1 and 2 works great) as well as warp. Maysville cotton carpet warp 8/4 is recommended. Students are also encouraged to have their looms warped before coming to the first Zoom session.

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
