2025-01-18 — Knit a Nordfjord Sweater (Online)

OL.2025.Q1.09
$210.00

Schedule:

Eight Saturdays, January 18 - March 1 (10:00-11:30 am CT) and March 8 (10:00 am-Noon CT)

Instructor:

Susan Kolstad

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

An artifact in the Vesterheim collection on display for many years in the permanent exhibits was a quiet sweater—with an interesting and intriguing history. Join in this KAL (knit a-long) and learn the background of the piece, the family genealogy search(es), and the unique construction of this and other Norwegian sweaters. During the KAL, students may choose to knit their own version of the Nordfjord sweater! Not ready for the commitment of knitting a sweater? An alternative cowl pattern with three different yarn selections will also be offered. This class is designed as a KAL, knitting alongside history, ancestry, and modern knitting trends. The instructor has visited Norway on two occasions to support the research and inspiration around the sweater from the Vesterheim collection—returning with fascinating and surprising content to share!

On March 8th students will have the option to attend virtually or in person. In person students will have the opportunity to visit the Vesterheim collections.

Level of Instruction:

You should be comfortable knitting and have some experience knitting with two colors (stranded knitting). It is helpful to know knitting gauge habits (i.e., swatching or adjusting needle size and yarn to achieve desired gauge).

Supplies:

Students will supply their own yarn, knitting needles, and necessary finishing tools. Yarns to consider for a cowl project are Rauma Finullgarn, Rauma Lamullgarn, Rauma Gammelserie with recommended needles to attain gauge. If you are planning to construct a sweater, the recommended yarn is Rauma Lammullgarn (ordered on own with guidance from the instructor), as well as recommended needles to attain gauge. Once you are registered for the class, an e-mail will be sent to the class participant with resources.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.

Special Instructions:

When registering for the class, please make sure to use the mailing and email addresses you'd like the Zoom meeting invitations sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient's mailing and email addresses or be prepared to forward the kit and all communications.
