2024-10-12 — FamilieTid: Enchanted Echoes – Tales of Nyckelharpa and Näcken
Schedule:
Instructor:
Location:
Join musician and storyteller Renee Vaughan for a journey into the world of the nyckelharpa and the rich folklore of Swedish folk music. Learn about Näcken, the mystical shapeshifter known for enchanting musicians and their instruments, sometimes causing the instruments to play on their own! Musicians themselves could even cast spells on one another, requiring protective measures like a trollpåse, little pouches hidden within their instruments, which contained special amulets.
Discover a fascinating magical chart from the mid-1800s that connected musical keys with colors, seasons, and emotions. It was created by Swedish fiddler, Olov August Widmark, who many believed was enchanted by the Näcken himself. It’s said that his fiddle had small holes made in the body to allow spirits to flow freely through the instrument, and especially to release the evil ones. His son, Per August Widmark, was also a fine fiddler and he immigrated to Minnesota in the late 1800s, bringing his father’s fiddle and tune book with him.
Experience the enchanting tales and tunes of Swedish folk music, including 'Hårgalåten,' 'Äpplebo Gånglåt,' and 'Pinntorpafrun,' while discovering the wizardry of legendary musicians like Byss-Kalle and Gås-Anders. Enjoy new stories and the musicianship of Renee and Paul in this course, perfect for kids and families who love music, stories, and a touch of magic."
