2025-07-28 – Tinwork Lantern (In-Person)

This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School in the woodworking classroom.
A tin lamp from the Vesterheim collection serves as the inspiration for this class. Starting with a flat sheet of tinplate, you will cut, shape, and solder tinplated steel to make a reproduction. The intricate designs will be made using a hammer and punches, then the lamp will be formed from the pierced pieces into a lantern. Patterns and guidance will be provided.
Level of Instruction:
All levels. Work requires hand strength.
Supplies:
There is a materials fee of $30, payable to the instructor in cash or check.
The instructor will provide tools and supplies, but if you have your own, please bring the following:
- Leather work gloves
- Sharpie marker
- Paper and pencil
- Tin snips
- Scratch awl
- Hammer
- Wooden or leather mallet
- Smooth jawed pliers
- Steel punches
