Class Details

  • Schedule: July 18-22 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)
  • Location: This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.
  • Instructor: Monika Sunnanå Ravnanger
  • Level of Instruction: Intermediate and Advanced

Description

Discover the ancient art of Varafell weaving, a traditional Viking-age technique closely related to rya weaving. Instead of yarn, this method uses wool locks as floss, creating a thick, warm, and durable textile. The Varafell, a warm shaggy-piled woven cloak, dates back to medieval times and was traditionally woven on a warp-weighted loom. In this class, students will learn to weave Varafell on a warp-weighted loom, exploring the historical techniques used by the Norse people. To create a Varafell, locks of coarser outer wool from the Icelandic sheep are knotted into the warp as the fabric is woven into a twill design. Through hands-on practice, students will gain an understanding of how these unique textiles were crafted for warmth and protection, while connecting with the rich heritage of Viking-era weaving.

Prerequisites

This course is designed for students with some experience in flat loom weaving and basic textile knowledge, though the warp-weighted loom techniques taught will be distinctly different.

Note: Because of the techniques used in warp-weighted loom weaving, this class will require participants to stand at their loom for large portions of the day.

Supplies

Long-locked fleeces in a variety of colors have been sourced by Vesterheim, and the cost of the fleece is built into the registration fee for this class.

Additional Supplies

Vesterheim has a few warp weighted looms for students to use, however if you have your own (floor or tabletop), we encourage you to bring it. Information about additional supplies and materials will be shared with registrants closer to the start of the class.
