Instructor:

Carol Bender

Location:

This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.

Join us for an in-depth study of Sebjørn Kverndalen, a masterful rosemaler who also excelled in cabinet making and wood carving. This class will explore Kverndalen's imaginative artistry, inspired by neoclassical flower garlands, chinoiserie, draperies and medallions, wing-shaped rococo ornaments, portraits, angels, and landscapes. Known for incorporating birds, especially peacocks, his paintings are characterized by a soft, lyrical, and transparent look, often featuring straight-line elements and the use of gold leaf.

Throughout the course, we will delve into Kverndalen's painting style, covering flowers, stroke work, scrolls, and other motifs, as well as his family history and the influence of the Kongsberg artist guilds and the Kravik family of painters.
