2025-07-19 – Åkle Weaving on a Warp-Weighted Loom (In-Person)
Schedule:
July 19-23 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)
Instructor:
Marta Kløve Juuhl
Location:
This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.
Discover the rich tradition of Åkle - or coverlet - weaving! In this class you’ll learn the techniques used to create beautiful textiles with banded designs, which are traditional to western Norway. Guided by Norwegian instructor, Marta Kløve Juuhl, you’ll explore traditional patterns, weaving methods, and colorwork to craft your own unique woven piece. Techniques will include two shuttle weaving, brocading, and boundweave (krokbragd).
Level of Instruction:
This course is designed for students with some experience in flat loom weaving and basic textile knowledge, though the warp-weighted loom techniques taught will be distinctly different.
Note: Because of the techniques used in warp-weighted loom weaving, this class will require participants to stand at their loom for large portions of the day.
Supplies:
A complete supply list will be sent out closer to the class date. Vesterheim has a few warp weighted looms for students to use, however if you have your own (floor or tabletop) we encourage you to bring it.
