Description
Learn to knit traditional Norwegian bunad socks in this online class designed for knitters interested in historic pattern work. Bunad socks are an essential part of Norway’s national folk costumes, known for their intricate textures, structured motifs, and timeless craftsmanship.
In this course, you’ll discover the techniques used to create authentic patterning, including working with charts, shaping the leg and foot, and achieving the classic fit and finish that make bunad socks so distinctive.
Prerequisites
Students should have intermediate knitting skills, including the ability to knit, purl, and work basic cable stitches.
Supplies
A kit of materials will be sent to you, including yarn from Rauma and a booklet of bunad sock patterns from which you may choose the design you wish to knit during the class.
If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
Additional Supplies
Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
Students will also need to provide the following:
- knitting needles; having two sets of needles is recommended for those who wish to knit both socks at the same time.
- stitch markers
- Acable needle.

You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class.
