Description
Lara Reisigl Domeneghetti presents From Birch to Walrus Tusk: Reconstructing the Tylldal Chair across Media and Territories. Through practice-based reconstruction and comparative material analysis with the help of Erna Þorbjörg Einarsdóttir.
Erna Þorbjörg Einarsdóttir contributed as a heritage woodworker, with a particular focus on reconstructing and making tools that replicate the working characteristics of historical originals. This has been central to the project, especially in relation to the Tylldal chair, where the aim is to reproduce tool marks that correspond closely to those found on the original object.
Her expertise lies both in recreating the tools themselves from scratch. That combination—analysis of marks and practical tool-making—is the core of what she has brought into the collaboration.
This presentation examines the Tylldal Chair as a birch “ivory” throne — linking Nidaros cathedral sculpture, walrus-tusk carving, and portable ecclesiastical furniture. The focus lies on tools, surfaces, and how craft knowledge traveled across media, workshops, and North Atlantic territories.
