2026-02-11 – Fjord Horse: Introduction to Tapestry Weaving, Post-Level 2 Skill Builder (Online)

OL.2026.Q1.18
$380.00

Schedule:

Seven Wednesdays, February 11 - March 25 (6:00-8:00 pm)

Instructor:

Laura Berlage

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Horses are an iconic part of Scandinavian folk art and stories, and the distinctive breed of the fjord horse is celebrated in this work inspired by a piece in the Vesterheim collection. Learn crossover billedvev and Flemish techniques, weaving the design “on its side,” as is often traditional for pictorials. Explore using small “floats” (as also seen in the original tapestry) to hop colors from one piece of the design to the next to create the striped tail and twisted harness.

This piece makes an excellent companion to the “Wise Virgin” and “Baldishol Bird” projects that Laura has previously taught.

Prerequisites:

Introduction to Tapestry Weaving, Level 2 with Laura Berlage.

Supplies:

This class includes a kit shipped to your home with a full-scale cartoon and colored miniature of the design, beautiful wool yarn from the instructor’s sheep, metal and wood decorative hanger, grosgrain ribbon and blanket binding for finishing, digital access to photo essay with instructions, and a special treat from Vesterheim (a $160 value).

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to supply the loom and small tools as used in the Intro to Tapestry Course, or a loom of their choice. Warp is not included in the kit. The instructor recommends using Bockens Lingard 16/3 linen warp from Vavstuga, but Maysville cotton carpet warp would work nicely instead as well.

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
