2025-12-03 – Knit a Sophie Scarf (Online)

OL.2025.Q4.95
$60.00

Schedule:

Two Wednesdays, December 3 and 10 (4:30-6:00 pm CT)

Instructor:

Maree Hampton

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

If you know how to knit and are ready for a relatively quick, stylish, and straightforward project, this class is for you! The Danish-based designer of Petiteknit designed the Sophie Scarf, and it has been wildly popular in Scandinavia and beyond!

The Sophie Scarf is worked back and forth in one piece, from tip to tip in garter stitch with built-in I-cord edges (a method for binding off that creates an attractive edge detail). The smaller size Sophie Scarf reaches around the neck once, while the larger size can wrap around the neck twice. It is versatile and fun to knit in a variety of yarns. It makes a great gift as well!

In this class, you'll learn I-cord edges and basic increase and decrease techniques. The instructor will show examples of Sophie Scarves that she has knit in a variety of yarns and lengths, and share how this popular scarf gained popularity in Scandinavia and beyond.

Level of instruction:

Advanced Beginner: You should be comfortable casting on, casting off, knitting, and purling.

Supplies:

A pattern will be sent to you before class.
You will need to provide the following supplies:
  • The pattern calls for one skein, or approximately 101-140 yards of DK weight yarn. When selecting your yarn, hold it up against your neck to ensure it feels comfortable and soft against your skin. Students may want to consider yarns such as Cashmere by Mondial, Cashmere Classic by Cardiff, or Cashmere Premium by Lang Yarn.
  • Needles: 3.5 mm [US4] / 60 cm [24 inches] circular needle
  • Gauge: 22 sts x 42 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches] in garter stitch on a 3.5 mm [US4] needle
  • Darning needle to weave in the ends
  • Stitch counter (recommended)

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
