IP.2024.Q3.42
$220.00

Schedule:

September 6-8 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)

Instructor:

Melba Granlund

Location:

This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.

Have you ever admired beautiful mittens in a museum display – the historic ones that were made from nålbinding? Even better, those that were embroidered? Some of the oldest nålbinding garments are socks and mittens, which date to either the Viking Era or earlier Iron Age. In this two-part series, Melba Granlund will guide you step-by-step on how to make the nålbinding mittens during a three-day in-person class at Vesterheim. During this class students will learn nålbinding stitches and techniques suitable for mittens using a variety of practice yarns.

Two weeks later in a one-day virtual class, Steph Anderson will provide instruction on how to add embroidery to your completed mittens.

You may choose to take either one or both of the classes, but will need to register for each class separately.

Printed materials, finished pieces, photographs, and historical garments from Vesterheim’s collection will be available for hands-on inspection and inspiration.

Level of Instruction:

This class is designed for beginners as well as those who have done nålbinding in the past.

Supplies:

  • Nålbinding needle. Bring your own, or you may purchase a handmade wooden nålbinding needle from the instructor for $10.
  • Yarn for finished project. Recommended yarns for nålbinding include any thick, single-ply woolen yarns like Lamb's Pride bulky, Alafoss Lopi, or Roving yarns. Loosely plied woolen yarns such as Rauma Vams also work well. Students may bring yarn for their finished mittens or wait to experiment with practice yarns in class first to determine what they like.
  • There will be a $10 materials fee payable to the instructor at the start of class that covers several types of practice yarns and written instructions for making the mittens.
  • Suggested additional tools:
    • Measuring tape
    • Note taking materials
