Schedule:

August 9-11, 2024 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)

Instructor:

Janelle Storesund

Location:

This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.

Sprang is an ancient textile technique that is made by twisting threads together. With this technique, just about anything can be made! Caps, belts, bags, shirts, pants, socks.

In this introductory class we will go over historical examples of sprang in Norway and Denmark, learn the basics of sprang techniques, and make one or two finished pieces to take home, using with the interlinking sprang technique. In class, you will choose to make a wearable cap, belt, or both, depending on time and your comfort level.

Level of Instruction:

All levels welcome.

Supplies:

A $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class. This materials fee will cover a sprang frame (which you will take home with you at the end of the class to use to make future sprang projects) and yarn.

Yarn will be provided for the sprang project in an assortment of colors, thickness, and fiber content for you to choose from. The thickness of the yarn chosen will be guided by your previous experience in textiles and how ambitious you’d like to be. The instructor will contact participants before class to get more info on which yarn you'd like to use so the instructor can help set up the sprang frame beforehand.

Participants also will receive an instruction PDF to take home to guide them through the next time they set up a sprang project.

Enrollment Deadline:
