2024-06-14 – Scandinavian Flat Plane Figure Carving
Schedule:
June 14-16 (9:00 am-5:00 pm CT)
Instructor:
Charles Banks
Location:
This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.
Join instructor Charles Banks for a dive into Scandinavian Flat Plane Figure carving. You will use only a knife to carve a Nordic-inspired character in this introduction to the simplified world of flat-plane carving. You will be introduced to history, information about past and present carvers, a multitude of figure carving options, necessary cuts, and finishing techniques, all culminating in a finished carving or two. This class does require a modest amount of dexterity and hand strength.
Level of Instruction:
All levels are welcome. This experience is open to new carvers as well as carvers with more experience.
Supplies:
Carvers should supply a 2-inch flat-edged scandi grind carving knife – a "Harley Refsal" knife, Helvie knife, flex cut "rough out" knife, and OCCT flat-edged knife are a few good options.
Bring a strop and compound.
Please supply yourself with a cut resistant carving glove, a leather "thumb saver" work apron, etc.
All acrylic paints, brushes, and wax finishes are provided by the instructor. Basswood blocks/ blanks are provided by the instructor at a cost of $10 per block/blank.
Enrollment Deadline:
May 24, 2024
