2024-05-16 – Baldishol Bird: Introduction to Tapestry Weaving, Post-Level 2 Skill Builder (Online)

This is an online class hosted on Zoom. 

Step back in time with your weaving skills in this immersive deep dive into motifs from the famous Norwegian Baldishol Tapestry. From exploring the diverse world of pointed dovetail joins to the stories, history, iconography, and symbolism of the original, this course is excellent for students who have completed Laura's Intro to Tapestry Level 2 while still being a delight for graduates of Level 3 as well. Learn to look deeply at historic tapestries to unravel the mysteries of what weavers were doing nearly 1000 years ago and see how these same solutions and challenges can play out on your loom today. The colors and size also make this project an excellent visual companion to the piece woven in Laura's Wise and Foolish Virgins class.

Supplies: 

This class includes a kit shipped to your home (a $125 value!) with beautifully dyed wool yarn from the instructor’s sheep, bleached linen weft for accents, cartoon, binding and mounting ribbons, decorative hanger, and PDF photo essay with detailed instructions, along with a sweet treat from Vesterheim.

Additional Supplies:

Students are responsible for providing their own loom and small supplies as used in Laura's Intro to Tapestry courses, a wool warp (recommend Jaggerspun 2 ply warp, available from Halcyon Yarns), and cotton carpet warp for headers.

Optional: Small sampling loom with additional warp and weft for practicing joins, if desired.

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
