$220.00

Schedule:

Friday, April 14-Sunday, April 16 (9:00 am-Noon, 1:00-5:00 pm)

Instructor

Tom Latané

Location:

This is an offsite class held at Tunnel Mill in Spring Valley, MN. Learn more about Tunnel Mill here.

Students will forge a small axe in a style from the Viking Age. The process will involve forge welding to produce a 5-inch long axe with stabilizing wings on the back of the eye and pointed cheeks on the sides. After being wrapped and welded with a tool steel bit between the mild steel layers, the blade will be spread and trimmed into a modest bearded profile. The bit will be hardened and tempered so it may be sharpened for use as a rough-out carving hatchet or camp axe (for those not planning any Viking raids).

Level of Instruction:

This is an intermediate level class. Some forge welding experience is strongly suggested. Techniques will include shouldering, careful spreading with the hammer pein, forge welding, lining up parts and forge welding, chisel trimming, some filing, and heat treating.

Supplies:

There will be a $15 materials fee payable directly to the instructor.

Meals and lodging at Tunnel Mill are available for an additional fee, please inquire for more information.

Enrollment Deadline:

March 31, 2023
