Square Weave Two Ways: Rutevev and Rölakan

Wednesday, August 17 – Sunday, August 21 (9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm)

This is an in-person class hosted at the Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah, Iowa.

Jan Mostrom

Rutevev and rölakan are both geometric tapestry techniques that were traditionally used for coverlets and cushion covers in Norway and Sweden. You will learn to weave square weave designs using both single and double interlocking and discuss why or when you might choose one over the other. You will also learn several traditional decorative pick-up and inlay techniques. These narrow decorative bands were used to separate or edge larger square weave areas in coverlets with designs that resembled the letter H, crabs or turtles, and the movement of water.

Level of Instruction:

Students must be able to warp a loom.

  • There is a $10 materials fee, payable to the instructor in cash or check.
  • We will shop at the Blue Heron on the first day of class for weaving yarn and will choose appropriate color values for the project. You may bring either Rauma prydvev or aekle weight yarns from your stash if you want.
  • Shuttles and bobbins (Vesterheim has weaving shuttles but many students prefer to bring their own)
  • Scissors
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Filler rags for the beginning and end of weaving

Enrollment Deadline:
