Spoons, Spatulas, and Spreaders (Online)
Thursdays, September 8-29 (6:00-7:30 pm CT)
This is an online class hosted on Zoom.
Do you want everything in your kitchen to be handmade? This class is a great start! Learn how to carve a cooking spoon, spatula, and spreader (for butter/soft cheese, etc.) from wood using traditional Nordic carving techniques. This four-week class focuses on knife skills and carving greenwood. We will talk about design and function while getting a better understanding of wood. Because this is a multi-week class, you can practice on your own time and join each session ready for feedback (although homework is not required).
Together, we will go through safe knife holds and the steps to carve safely and efficiently. Carving is just as safe as cooking at home. You only need good hand strength and flexibility to carve your own woodenware.
This class includes a kit with a Morakniv 120 carving knife, a Morakniv 164 hook carving knife, spoon blanks, sandpaper, oil, a wooden strop and honing compound for sharpening your knives, and carving gloves (a $125 value). Kits will be shipped to your home and will have everything you need to continue carving, long after the class.
The safety gloves for this class come in three sizes. Click here to see the size chart.
If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
Please wear pants and closed-toe shoes.
This class is for continuing beginners or those with some carving experience.
When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to, and the email address you'd like the Zoom meeting invitations sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient's mailing and email addresses or be prepared to forward all communications and/or kit supplies.
