2023-06-12 – Pride Selbu Mittens (Online)

Mondays, June 12 - 26 (6:00-7:30 pm CT)

Susan Kolstad

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

The Selbu mitten design is a commonly-known classic traditional motif with rich history and many interesting variations. Step into a Selbu design variation inspired by an Instagram post from the Pride Festival in Svalbard, Norway. From an area in the northern-most area of Norway, this is the warmest take on the Selbu mitten—a Selbu mitten designed for Pride!

The mitten design is a traditional Rauma pattern layered with rainbow colors in a collaboration with Lesley Darling of Lesley Darling Fibers. Lesley will naturally dye the colorful yarn for the Selbu Pride mitten knit in Rauma Strikkegarn three-tred. (Participants can also choose to use their own yarn and knit the mittens in two colors; work with the instructor to modify.) The class will provide an opportunity to learn more about Pride in Norway alongside a traditional mitten design and will include stranded (two-color knitting) and shaping techniques.

Please note: The naturally dyed yarn colors will differ slightly from the ones pictured. The mittens in the photo were knitted using factory dyed yarn.

A kit of materials (valued at $90) shipped to your home is included in the cost of registration. It contains 150g of hand-dyed yarns (25g each of six colors) to make the Selbu Pride mittens and two skeins of main color (undyed) yarn, as well as the Rauma PDF pattern and some Prideful surprise treats from the instructor.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.

This class is designed for experienced knitters who are interested in gaining additional skills with stranded colorwork.
