2023-04-29 – Pick-up Bandweaving with a Bandgrind (Online)

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.  

The woven band played an important role in traditional Norwegian clothing. Bands were used to close or support clothing in ways that we now use buttons, zippers, snaps, or velcro. They also added beauty and interest to an item of clothing while identifying a person as coming from a particular area of Norway. Today, bands can be used as bookmarks, belts, lanyards, bag closures, and handles. In this class, we will focus on a pick-up technique using a bandgrind, or band heddle. Students will be provided with all the equipment and materials needed to weave a sample band, including a bandgrind, shuttle, clamp, belt, and yarn. Band weaving is a good introduction to weaving, and students of all skill levels are welcome.

Supplies: 

A complete kit of materials shipped to your home (a $60 value) is included in the cost of registration.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Additional Supplies: 

Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
