2023-05-10 – Mezen Style Painted Box (Online)
Wednesdays, May 10 - 24 (2:00-5:00 pm CT)
This is an online class hosted on Zoom.
Like many other folk arts, Mezen style painting got its name from where it started. Mezen as a folk art originates in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia along the Mezen River, but the inspiration came from the rock paintings in and around Alta, Norway. It was the indigenous people who followed the reindeer that brought the motifs from Norway to Russia.
This folk art is fun and charming and is appropriate for beginners and advanced painters alike. We will use two colors of paint based on the old, traditional palette and one brush. The brush used is a liner, so you will have a lot of practice with linework! The box we will paint is being custom-made for this class and should be a treat to work with.
The motifs used in Mezen painting represent elements found in the underworld, on earth, and in the heavens. The meanings of the symbols will be discussed.
A complete kit of materials (valued at $60) containing paints, brushes, sandpaper, a custom-built box, and a sweet treat from Vesterheim is included in the cost of registration and will be shipped to you.
If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact email@example.com when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
