July Family Book Adventure: Lena, the Sea, and Me (Online)

July 2022

Shannon Horton

This program has been designed for families to experience on their own schedules. There is no live Zoom event and no scheduled class time – your family can participate anytime during the month when it works for your schedule! On the first of the month, you will receive an email with the links and information about how to access.

Join us for this family-fun reading and outdoor adventure! Your family can be any combination of folks as long as there’s at least one adult to help navigate the online portion. Decorah schools librarian Shannon Horton will get you reading, thinking, creating, and even up and moving – indoors and out! A kit delivered right to your home contains supplies for book-reading, a fun craft, a snack, and a scavenger-hunt-type adventure.

For July, we’re going to read Lena, the Sea, and Me, Norwegian author Maria Parr's charming sequel to Adventures with Waffles. This book is geared toward readers ages 7-10, but the adventure is appropriate for kids as young as five years old as long as there’s an adult around to help read the story and make the fun. The main characters Trille and Lena navigate the rough waters of friendship when a new soccer coach and a new girl in school disrupt their seaside escapades.

In the spirit of the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv, the scavenger-hunt-type activity will get into the great outdoors.

The $20-per-family price covers the cost of a kit including a copy of the book, materials you'll need for the fun hands-on activities, a special treat from Vesterheim, and directions for downloading and using the Goosechase app (a free app that is downloadable on any iOS or Android device). You will need to provide a tablet or mobile device to use the Goosechase app.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.

Special Instructions:

When registering for the class, please make sure to use the address you'd like the kit shipped to, and the email address you'd like the Zoom meeting invitations sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient's mailing and email addresses or be prepared to forward all communications and/or kit supplies.
