Introduction to Rosemaling: Viksdal Style
Monday, August 1 - Wednesday, August 3 (9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm)
This is an in-person class hosted at Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah, Iowa.
In this beginner's rosemaling class, you will learn to paint rosemaling in the style of Viksdal, one of the longest known styles of Norwegian rosemaling, which is seen on hundreds of bentwood boxes, tines, and other handmade items. Many of these designs were based on compass and chip-carved designs. They were usually done with strong strokes of color. They were mostly geometric and were rarely realistic. The earliest background color was usually red with varying strokes of black, yellow, green, blue, and white. It is an old and valued tradition and a distinctive painting style. The class will consist of discussions and work with the Viksdal designs, strokes, and various colorations. A small tine and a 12-inch plate will be the class projects with an emphasis on your involvement in the designing and strokes.
Level of Instruction:
Beginners with some experience painting, but little to no experience rosemaling.
