2023-06-02 – Intermediate Bandweaving (Online)
Fridays, June 2 (10:00-11:30 am and 3:00-4:30 pm CT) and June 9 & 16 (10:00-11:30 am CT)
This is an online class hosted on Zoom.
Woven bands of various types have a long history, serving to tie up socks or reinforce hems and cuffs. Decorative bands were used to swaddle and protect infants and pull closed various bags and bundles. While yardage for skirts, pants, and shirts was often woven in a solid color, bands were used to add color, interest, protection, and strength to garments.
This class will focus on a more advanced pick-up technique that requires a special rigid heddle called a spaltegrind in Norwegian. This technique allows the weaver to explore a wide range of patterns and colors. Students will learn all aspects of the weaving process, including preparing a warp, threading the spaltegrind, reading drafts, and design.
Students must have taken either the online or in-person Pickup Bandweaving with a Bandgrind class through Vesterheim or have comparable pickup band weaving experience. Please don't hesitate to email email@example.com if you have any questions!
A kit of materials (a $55 value) including a spaltegrind and printed materials shipped to your home is included in the cost of registration.
In addition to the kit of materials, students will need the materials from the kit used in the prerequisite class, Pick-Up Bandweaving with the Bandgrind, (belt shuttle, belt clamp, belt, lease sticks, spacing sticks, clamp, tapestry needle, two yard length of clothesline cord). Students will also need to provide scissors, warping pegs, and yarn. Warping pegs and yarn are available for purchase from www.woolery.com; more information about yarn will be sent approximately one month prior to class.
If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
Students will need to provide a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.
When registering for the class, please make sure to use the email address you'd like the Zoom meeting invitations sent to. You will receive links to the Zoom sessions by email sometime during the week prior to the class. If this class is a gift, please sign up with the recipient's email address or be prepared to forward all communications.
