This is an in-person class hosted at the Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah, Iowa.


Have you ever been curious about the carved posts and beams in Vesterheim's heritage park? Hand carved details like this are common throughout Scandinavian architecture. Tour Vesterheim's own collection for inspiration and work with talented instructor Jock Holmen to create your own hand carved post to take home. From tool sharpening to layout and design to carving, you will create a 6 inch x 8 inch x 8 foot post from Iowa white pine.


Level of Instruction:

All levels are welcome.


One 6 inch x 8 inch x 8 foot white pine post per student will be provided in class. If you need different wood, a second post, or want to bring your own, please contact us folkartschool@vesterheim.org.


Tools needed: #5-30mm or 40mm gouge and #2-20mm or 30mm gouge.

Bring any gouges you own. The instructor will also have loaner tools to use.

All students can expect a call from Jock in the weeks before class to discuss class goals.

Please make sure this post will fit in your vehicle to travel home or make other arrangements for transportation of your finished project. Vesterheim will not be responsible for storage of class projects.
