Crafting the Knutkorg: The Scandinavian Knot Basket
Thursday, September 15 - Sunday, September 18 (9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm)
Fred Livesay and Phil Moody
This is an in-person class hosted at the Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah, Iowa.
If Little Red Riding Hood were Scandinavian, she would have skipped through the forest with a knutkorg or “knot basket." Knot baskets are particular to Telemark and the West Coast of Norway and the Hedesunda region of Sweden. This intensive four-day class begins with a close study of baskets from Vesterheim’s collection and those of the instructor. Students will then begin crafting a 10 x 10 x 8-inch basket using only a few tools and simple methods. The class will progress from how to select, gather, and process the materials to carving the “knots” and splitting out of corners, uprights, and weavers. You will also learn proper techniques to achieve tight and good-looking baskets.
Level of Instruction:
Previous carving experience is highly recommended. For example, having
carved a minimum of 6 spoons or the equivalent. Good hand strength is a
must for this class (ability to open a fairly tight jar).
There is a materials fee of $45 payable to the instructor in cash or check.
Additional supplies required:
- Mora 106 or 120 carving knife
- Metric ruler
- Soft pencil or small tipped Sharpie
- All other tools will be supplied by the instructors.
