2023-01-17 – Continuing Hardanger Embroidery (Online)

Tuesdays, January 17-31 (3:00-5:00 pm CT)

Shan Rayray

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Hardangersøm is Norwegian drawn work. In this beginner/intermediate Hardanger embroidery online class, you will learn common Hardangersøm stitches as you make a cute ornament for Valentine’s Day. Instructor Shan Rayray will take you step-by-step through each of the stitches (kloster blocks/satin stitch, drawn thread work with woven bars, ship motif, and buttonhole edge stitch.) The class will consist of three sessions over three weeks. Each session will be accompanied by a video tutorial that you can refer to between class sessions as you complete each step. All materials will be provided, except stork scissors. Since this is a beginning/intermediate class, it is expected you already have some Hardangersøm or other type of embroidery experience and therefore have acceptable scissors. Stork scissors are available for purchase in the Vesterheim Museum Store.

A kit of supplies including two prepared 22-count Hardanger squares, DMC embroidery thread and tapestry needles is included with registration. Additionally, you will need to provide sharp embroidery scissors. You may wish to provide a needle threader, thimble, and magnifier.

If you are registering for this class in a location outside the United States, you will need to provide your own supplies. Please contact folkartschool@vesterheim.org when you register for more information about what materials are required for this class.
