Rosemaling is an iconic and traditional art form, and experienced rosemalers in this class will explore the stylistic elements of rosemaling in the Nordfjord style.

Unlike other styles of rosemaling, the Nordfjord style was not influenced by outside impulses. The style is no longer painted in Norway and it is up to us to keep it alive. The palette of colors is simple with no blending and shading. Often, geometric shapes are used. There generally are three elements to the painted bowls: the bottom design, the side design, and lettering on the outside.

Bowl turner Roger Abrahamson shares that "traditionally, decorated bowls were used to serve ale ceremonially for special occasions such as weddings, Christmas, christenings, and other events. Each bowl is born from a green (freshly cut) log, then turned. Tool marks on the surface show the hand of the maker. As you see in old bowls, small imperfections and warpage does occur and is part of the natural process. The wood is worked green and seasoned after the bowl is created. Minimal abrasives are used like the originals that inspire me. Each bowl is a unique creation, there are no two exactly alike."

Supplies

Included in the cost of registration for this class is a kit of materials valued at $285.
