2023-10-22 – Introduction to Joik (Online)
Schedule:
Instructor:
Facilitated By:
Elisabeth Berg
Location:
What is a joik? What does it feel like to joik? In this class, we will learn about the traditional way of singing of the Sámi people and learn a couple of joik-melodies ourselves. The joik is the traditional form of Sámi song, and has its own musical rules and a very special connection to nature and all living beings.
Iŋgor Ántte Áilu Gaup (artist name Ailloš) learn to joik as a child when he grew up in the very north of Norway, and he has been teaching others to joik ever since. This class is great for everybody curious about joiking, beginners and experienced singers alike. Ailloš will introduce the joiks step-by-step. Sometimes we will mute our microphones and be free to practice unheard, but Ailloš would also very much like to hear us one by one, so that he can give feedback. Join the fun and be surprised what your voice can do!(Photos by Johan Mathis Gaup.)
