2023-07-22 – Rosemaling Goes Contemporary
Schedule:
Saturday, July 22 - Wednesday, July 26, 2023 (9:00 am-Noon, 1:00-5:00 pm)
Instructor:
Mona Stenseth Erlandsen
Location:
This is an in-person class held at Vesterheim Folk Art School.
Mona Stenseth Erlandsen will engage you in a contemporary rosemaling experience that respects the history and tradition of the roots of Norwegian cultural heritage – but at the same time asks for reflection on what «rosemaling» means today, inspiring you to explore new directions without disrespecting our ancestors. We will be breaking down the rules to learn how to play respectfully with our language of heritage.
Her class presentation combines creativity with common sense and individual thinking, as she discusses related topics – from paint medium choices and color mixing and how to create balance and harmony with your own original designs. Mona is especially excited to help you find inspiration from objects in the Vesterheim collection. By breaking down an old rosemaling example into its different style elements, you will discover ways to create fresh, individual expressions. Welcome to an art class that will help you learn and play with the concept of "identity"!
Level of Instruction:
Some rosemaling experience is preferred.
Supplies:
- We will be working with acrylic and/or oils. I will be teaching how to get the best results from different mediums and why we choose eighter. The students can work with acrylic only if they prefer, but I also encourage practicing the traditional painting techniques in oils. Usually I do the coating/backgrounds with acrylic, then work my way through the details with oil.
- A stretched canvas, MDF board, etc. Suggested size 40x50 cm
- A detailed supply list will be provided closer to class.
Enrollment Deadline:
July 10, 2023
