2023-04-15 – Writing Family Stories: Digging Deeper
Schedule:
Saturday, April 15-Sunday, April 16 (9:00 am-Noon, 1:00-5:00 pm)
Instructor:
Kathleen Ernst
Location:
This is an in-person class hosted at Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah.
Memories make a wonderful starting point for writers wanting to capture family lore. Inevitably, however, we are stymied by gaps in the records or genealogical brick walls. How do we write about people we never knew? How do we find stories if an ancestor left behind only a single photograph or heirloom . . . or nothing at all?
In this workshop, students will explore several techniques to help address those challenges, including inquiry-based, speculative, and imaginative writing. With Vesterheim’s rich collections as inspiration, you’ll take your writing to a new level.
Level of Instruction:
All levels. No prior writing experience is necessary.
Supplies:
Each student will need a notebook or journal and pen/pencil. Laptops are optional.
Enrollment Deadline:
March 24, 2023
