2024-01-07 Knitting Selbu Mittens (Online)

OL.2024.Q1.03
$75.00

Schedule:

Three Sundays, January 7-21 (Noon-1:30 pm CT)

Instructor:

Jane Addams

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Dating back to 1857, Selbu mittens are one of the most iconic Norwegian garments. They have existed as currency, as souvenirs, and as a source of financial independence for women who had few options. In this intermediate knitting class, we will make a pair of Selbu mittens with live demonstrations as well as a prerecorded tutorial to reference on your own time. We will discuss history, tips and tricks, and easy modifications as we knit a pattern inspired by pieces in the Vesterheim collection.

Supplies:

To ensure you can choose the color combo you want to work with (you can choose a traditional black-and-white combo or go with a more modern twist), students in this class will be responsible for purchasing their own supplies. You will need double-pointed knitting needles in sizes US 3 and 4 as well as two colors of yarn. Recommended brands will be shared well in advance of class, and yarn can be ordered through Blue Heron Knittery (linked here) in Decorah or sourced from your local store.

Additional Supplies:

A work surface like a sturdy table, good light, and a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.

Special Instructions:
