These wooden objects ranged from simple and easily replaceable to finely crafted, treasured works of art. Join bowl turner David Susag for a three-day introduction to the foot-powered spring pole lathe with an emphasis on creating Nordic-style bowls common from the Viking period through industrialization. Instead, they turned to the abundance of the forests. A unique technique was developed to make thin, strong splints from wild willow, hazel, birch, bird cherry, and juniper by ingeniously splitting them with a specialized brake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou will learn to make splints with both traditional Norwegian and adapted modern techniques from regionally appropriate trees including willow, maple, and ash.
