OL.2024.Q4.103
$400.00

 Schedule:

Six Saturdays, November 2 - December 14 (3:00-5:00 pm CT) (No class on November 30)

Instructor:

Laura Berlage

Location:

This is an online class hosted on Zoom.

Rutevev (Norwegian for “square weave”) is a beloved tradition in tapestry weaving. Skinnfell (full fleece shearling pelt from sheep) is a beloved tradition too! Historically, tapestry and skinnfell could be used together to make especially warm winter bedding. In this class, we’ll hone our skills in rutevev techniques like interlock, pattern reading, evenness, and symmetry. The weaving techniques are combined with learning leatherworking skills to transform your tapestry into a beautiful and cozy pillow with a sheepskin back. Both the wool in the yarn and the sheepskin pelt are from the instructor’s sheep!

Prerequisite:

designed as an excellent skill builder for students who have completed “Introduction to Tapestry Weaving, Level 2"

Supplies:

A complete kit of materials ($175 value!) is included in the cost of registration. The kit includes hand-dyed wool yarn from the instructor’s sheep, sheepskin pelt for back of pillow, grid design, 2 glover’s needles, faux sinew for stitching, a photo essay documenting the process for this project from start to finish and a sweet treat. You will also need a computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and mic as well as a fast, reliable internet connection.

Additional Supplies:

Students will need to provide frame loom and accessories (same as we used for Level 2 course), warp (Maysville cotton carpet warp 8/4 recommended), 8 safety pins,12 inch filler pillow (correct size is important), needle and thread for finishing tapestry headers, fabric clips or clothes pins for finishing headers.
