The basketry tradition known as \"stake and strand\" was one such craft, because baskets were used to store nearly everything around the homestead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClass members will make a sturdy and functional round basket with a handle using a variety of weaves. You’ll learn the techniques behind the terms slath, twining, 3-rod wale, French randing, and border weaves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClass discussions will cover willow cultivation and harvest, traditions, and lore. \u003cbr\u003eThe class will assure a new appreciation for the art and craft of basketry and open a door to the amazing world of willow. You will be introduced to basic weaving terminology and skills, such as how to make a warp, dress a loom, and read threading drafts. We will explore both balanced and overshot structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe projects selected for this class will focus mainly on traditional Norwegian weaving drafts and structures. We will discuss finishing techniques including treatment of ends and blocking. You will be introduced to the use of natural fibers, primarily wool and cotton. Across Norway, these simple forms became canvases for creativity, with examples that feature chip carving, relief carving, and decorative carving in the round, such as rings, chains, or the classic ball-in-cage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis class is designed for students who have some prior carving experience and are ready to build on their skills. It is not a first-time carving class, but it is well suited for students at the beginning-intermediate level through advanced carvers. Instruction and projects can be adapted to meet each participant’s comfort level and goals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStudents will study historical examples from Vesterheim’s collection and use them as inspiration while designing and carving their own \u003cem\u003enøstepinne\u003c\/em\u003e. Over three days, we will explore chip carving, relief carving, and carving in the round. It made it possible for them to live in the harsh climate in the North and made it possible for them to go to sea and out into the world. It is assumed that the Warp Weighted Loom, also called \u003cem\u003eOppstadgogn\u003c\/em\u003e, was used since The Stone Age. The loom stands up against the wall and the warp threads are knotted to the stone or ceramic weights at the bottom. This loom was used to produce everything from cloth and blankets to sails.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pile-weave technique takes us several thousand years back in time. A pile textile has two different sides: on one side the structure of the weave is visible, while on the other, the pile is woven and tied in with knots. The pile, also known as floss, rag, or napp in Norwegian, is made from wool, thread, or textile scraps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen worn against the body, the warm air in the pile will keep you warm. Facing outwards, the pile will protect you from the rain. Pile textiles have most likely been used on both sides, as protection against the rain and cold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe most documented and preserved floss textile in Norway is the boat rug. The rugs were an important part of the boat’s equipment and were in use during fishing and on boat trips along the coast in many parts of the country. Just east of Grand Marais, the lodge was built at the end of the Roaring 20s to be a luxurious retreat club with founding members like Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey. When the stock market crashed in October 1929 many of the grandiose plans crashed as well, but the main lodge with its gorgeous dining room was nearly finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis dining room is a show-stopping example of color and artistic creation. Spinning has endured as a craft that is as essential to daily life as it is relaxing, empowering, and creative. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStudents will learn to use a drop spindle to create yarn and experience different ways to ply yarn for strength. We will explore a variety of wool types to become familiar with what is available and what to choose for different projects. Wool preparation will be demonstrated using hand carders, drum carders, and combs. Types of yarn, such as woolen and worsted, will be achieved using different preparation methods. Students can choose to focus on creating enough material to weave a coaster on a hand loom, or continue their exploration of different types of wool.
