The explanation that the "missing father" has gone to "Amerika" is a good one. Unfortunately, the alternative explanation was all too common: the "missing father" was deceased at a young age. The result was often that some or all of the survivors pictured later emigrated to escape the poverty that the loss of husband/father plunged them into. This happened among both my ancestors and my wife's ancestors in the mid to late 1800's.
I cannot comment on the technical aspects of the painting as the emotional aspects of it are so strong for us. It is very meaningful to us.
